A good solid story。 No strong character development, just a good story。 I was really surprised that the author left a really big hint in this one。 She usually doesn’t do that, so it was definitely surprising。

I love this series! Dallas and Roarkes connection is awesome。 Dallas makes me laugh out loud with her comments 😂

While I loved the newest In Death book, it feels as though Nora has gotten a new editor or a ghostwriter。 The In Death series has always had a continuous tone, one hat doesn't show up in her other books, while this one had alterations to that tone。 Payback In Death started off as flowery as Nora's trilogys, but quickly hopped into the suspense readers are used to expecting。 While I loved the newest In Death book, it feels as though Nora has gotten a new editor or a ghostwriter。 The In Death series has always had a continuous tone, one hat doesn't show up in her other books, while this one had alterations to that tone。 Payback In Death started off as flowery as Nora's trilogys, but quickly hopped into the suspense readers are used to expecting。 。。。more

I mean, this is book 57 in the series。 SO。 I thought this was a solid installment。 I continue to like the characters。 I admit that, like Eve, I think I'm over the saga of Mavis and Peabody's renovations in their new house。 Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for them, but I've been hearing about it for the last few books。I liked the angle of the victim being in internal affairs, and therefore looking into the corruption on the force angle。 I do think the related side-plot around Lansing probably neede I mean, this is book 57 in the series。 SO。 I thought this was a solid installment。 I continue to like the characters。 I admit that, like Eve, I think I'm over the saga of Mavis and Peabody's renovations in their new house。 Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for them, but I've been hearing about it for the last few books。I liked the angle of the victim being in internal affairs, and therefore looking into the corruption on the force angle。 I do think the related side-plot around Lansing probably needed another scene, but maybe that's coming in the next one。I particularly liked the scenes with Feeney and Mira and Eve in this one, but then I always do。Solid installment, but unfortunately not five stars, because at no point was Roarke described in ridiculous terms。 There was nary a "doomed poet" or "fallen angel" comparison to be found。 Le sigh。 。。。more

Back to formI didn't like the last two books but this one was back to form。 The one prior to this, the killer was not interesting and the other was just too dark, but this one was enjoyable。 Would have liked to see more Mavis, but overall I was glad to be back in the World of Dallas and Roark。 Back to formI didn't like the last two books but this one was back to form。 The one prior to this, the killer was not interesting and the other was just too dark, but this one was enjoyable。 Would have liked to see more Mavis, but overall I was glad to be back in the World of Dallas and Roark。 。。。more

I have loved these books for years and this most recent one was no exception。 The characters, the story, the murder。 All truly excellent。 And this one felt more true to police work than others, which I appreciated as well。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Moved at a good pace; storyline was interesting。It seems unlikely that a character who had taken 10 years to plan her revenge would keep incriminating evidence on her home — particularly because the police kept referring to the crime as a well thought out one, a smart murder。 So — that rang untrue。Other than that — enjoyable enough…!

Kathleen Long

Ok story but repetitive。 Book could have been finished with 100 fewer pages

I rated this book higher than I did some previous ones in the series。 Robb finally got back to an actual murder mystery instead of the international cabal conspiracies that she had been having Dallas fall into。

For being the 57th book of the "In Death" series。。。。 there is never a dull moment or repetitious story line! I absolutely love this series and the characters feel like "part of the family"! I absolutely love this series and the characters feel like "part of the family"! In this book, the beginning made me smile as we see NYPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke on a well-deserved and needed vacation that included a stop at the farm of his Irish family。 This gave the opportunity to once again meet the family, and "hear" some of the comical ways Dallas refers to farm animals, which could be the only things she fears! Unfortunately, her vacation ends with an urgent call to respond to a murder scene, which puts her and her "civilian assistant" Roarke back into action。 The involvement of Eve's bullpen in this death of "one of theirs" brings character favorites to the forefront as the trail leads through the families of bad-cops who had ended their own lives。 Added into this is an unforgettable fight-scene between Dallas and an out-of-control cop, where modern medical technology and Eve's reaction to it all will also bring a smirk to the reader's face。 Overall, this book had everything in it that we love to see while reading the "In Death" series 。。。。 and hard to wait for the next one to hit the shelves!! #PaybackinDeath #StMartinsPress #JDRobb #NoraRoberts 。。。more

As always, J。D outdoes herself。 Full of the Eve and Roarke we know and love。

This was a fun one。 Not too much gore。 Not too much suspense but I like that。I hope there is more stuff for the side characters to do; Peabody and Mavis decorating their house can only go so far。

Once again, I enjoyed this latest story about Eve and Roark。 It did not disappoint。 And, after YEARS of reading cop stories and watching cop shows on TV - from Inspector Banks, to Harry Bosch, and Detective Benson and the incomparable Reagan family on Blue Bloods, IAB has always been a hated, and interfering entity。 The enemy to cops。 This story, Payback in Death encouraged me to look at the IAB unit in a different light。 It holds the integrity of good cops sacrosanct。 It should put the fear of Once again, I enjoyed this latest story about Eve and Roark。 It did not disappoint。 And, after YEARS of reading cop stories and watching cop shows on TV - from Inspector Banks, to Harry Bosch, and Detective Benson and the incomparable Reagan family on Blue Bloods, IAB has always been a hated, and interfering entity。 The enemy to cops。 This story, Payback in Death encouraged me to look at the IAB unit in a different light。 It holds the integrity of good cops sacrosanct。 It should put the fear of "outing" in the hearts of bad cops。。。 just as long as IAB cops never 'go bad'。 。。。more

Solid read。 I love these characters。 Really enjoyed the start。 Would like to see a bit more character development with Peabody。 Must be the world's longest renovations but I suppose the time frame of this book is only 1 week。 I was a bit disappointed with the ending。 I really felt like there was potential for a huge twist but it never came。 Solid read。 I love these characters。 Really enjoyed the start。 Would like to see a bit more character development with Peabody。 Must be the world's longest renovations but I suppose the time frame of this book is only 1 week。 I was a bit disappointed with the ending。 I really felt like there was potential for a huge twist but it never came。 。。。more

This was one of those cases where Eve knew what she knew but had to keep digging to bring it all together。 An example of instinct vs evidence and the frustrations of making them work together。 Once she found that missing link, though -- *Click*While the case was solid and compelling, I would have given this book five stars regardless due to the opening chapter。 I love it when we spend time with friends and family, and I fall in love with Roarke's kin more each time we see them。 On a personal not This was one of those cases where Eve knew what she knew but had to keep digging to bring it all together。 An example of instinct vs evidence and the frustrations of making them work together。 Once she found that missing link, though -- *Click*While the case was solid and compelling, I would have given this book five stars regardless due to the opening chapter。 I love it when we spend time with friends and family, and I fall in love with Roarke's kin more each time we see them。 On a personal note, I've been reading this series as a buddy-read with a group of GR friends。 We've dedicated 57 weeks to this endeavor and had good discussions and a lot of fun。 As of today (11 December 2023), we now have to wait for the next installment, Random in Death, to be released in a little under two months。 Seven weeks isn't a particularly long time, but I will miss the updates in the interim。 。。。more

Super-solid, fast-moving police procedural。If you read this series for the relationships or humor that has been in past books in the series - you won't find a lot of that (other than Roark being everywhere all the time) - but the crime-solving, police part is more tightly written than in the past few entries in the series。The one thing I couldn't figure - unless it's a set-up for a future book - is why spend time on the cop who went after her physically。 Just seemed gratuitous violence to justif Super-solid, fast-moving police procedural。If you read this series for the relationships or humor that has been in past books in the series - you won't find a lot of that (other than Roark being everywhere all the time) - but the crime-solving, police part is more tightly written than in the past few entries in the series。The one thing I couldn't figure - unless it's a set-up for a future book - is why spend time on the cop who went after her physically。 Just seemed gratuitous violence to justify another statement - which added nothing - that Dallas is a violent woman。 Again, maybe a set-up for another book; just seemed pointless in this book。Still, really enjoyed this entry in this long-running series。 。。。more

The last time I read an Eve Dallas novel was about ten years ago。 I didn’t care for it at all。 I have changed my mind after reading this。 The main characters are clearly familiar to repeat readers, but they are still portrayed fully enough for a new reader to appreciate Payback in Death as a stand alone title。 I don’t plan to read all 56 previous “in Death” novels, but am not averse to picking up a few for fun。
